LATAA SCHOOL OPENING
On March 29, 2008 LATAA took the first steps to teach the young Turks their culture, their language and a touch of their history in Los Angeles and to introduce elementary Turkish to adults. The idea of opening a Turkish School in Los Angeles is strongly supported by our President Abdullah Gul. The opening day was honored by our Consul General Hakan Tekin, our Vice Consul Batu Kesmen, our Education Attaché Nazmi Ak and our Commercial Attaché Selen Eryuce.
After having registered 12 children and 5 adults the classes started with an opening speech of Honorary Consul General Hakan Tekin. LATAA would like to take this opportunity to thank him for his continuing support for our school.
Opening a Turkish School was just an idea for less than six months ago. LATAA Board of Directors worked hand in hand to find the best location, to deploy the most suitable academics and to establish a school committee. Our Education Attaché Nazmi Bey helped us by sharing his experience in teaching and his office supplied us with the study materials. LATAA would like to thank him for his time and efforts.

We would not be making this announcement if we did not have the enthusiasm and the contribution of our teachers who are very happy of having the opportunity to teach the young Turks and the adults. The school committee worked very hard to decorate the classes with pictures of our founder Ataturk, Turkish flags and maps and gifts from our ex-board member Philip Westernoff.
Our happiest moment was when the parents gathered around the breakfast buffet during the first recess. It was a total success! A student who did not wish to be registered in the beginning was asking with excitement when the next class was. She could not wait to be back. A couple of parents who were not sure what to expect from our school decided to continue our classes. The children were already making plans to meet each other before the next class.
This was everyone’s success. I thank you all who contributed to this memorable and wonderful day.
